TANNER JAM-2018 by Valgal and Miserable George

I’ve been informed that

this year’s Tanner Jam has surpassed ALL OTHERS!!!!

Iffy weather early in the day didn’t seem to deter attendance at all, as over 40 bikes rode for Tanner after a breakfast at H&D Roadhouse, on SR 520, on Merritt Island, FL. Meanwhile, at the H&D grounds, bands were already started, sales of Tanner items was VERY brisk, and there was a big selection of silent auction merchandise…(thanks David for bidding my painting up to $100 !!) All for Tanner!!

Speaking of Tanner, he arrived with Wild Bill, in Bill’s 1940, fire belching,Caddy-Chevvy! The boy LOVES that car. He may have Cystic Fibrosis, but, in no time at all, he was out back, climbing trees and exploring the huge earth-mover tires next door.

The huge number of bikes soon spilled out of the parking lot, which, this year, featured a bandstand to handle live groups which played for 45 minute gigs each! Big Daddy was there to help with the electronic end of things!  Featured bands were:Wicked Garden Gnomes, Undercover, No Pressure, Them Seeds, Loaded Dice, The Action, Rumble Seat, and the Matt Sams Band. Good, live entertainment, all day long!!!

Lots of pretty girls prancing around too, along with super food and drinks. Oh yeah, Debbie Vigliano won a trip to Scotland!!! She was really excited about THAT!!

A big thanks goes out to all the folks who helped make this annual fund raiser a smashing success…Larry and Mo Fallon…couldn’t have done it without you guys, all the H&D staff, and Harry and Debbie, you guys are angels…!! Oh yeah, that parking lot attendant was the prettiest I EVER saw!!! Thank you everyone for a tremendous, fun filled day!!! Ride safe, remember our vets, and…Stand Up For Your Country!!!

BILLY LANE’S SONS OF SPEED…2018 by Miserable George

If I’m gonna be in the pits on Race Day, I wanna be there early, and, early I was, on St. Paddy’s Day, 2018, for Billy Lane’s Sons of Speed Races at New Smyrna Speedway. Weather was shaping up to be just about perfect…sunny and warm!!!

I love to watch the last minute tuning of those 100 year old motors, nestled in a special, handmade frame, with no clutch, tranny, or brakes to make it easy!!!

I believe it takes a special kind of rider to take command of one of these ornery machines…hard to start, and hard to stop too!!

BUT, long about 1PM, after tuning, warm-up laps for both engines and tires, the first heat blasted off. It was the stock 45’s, followed by the stock 61’s, and then, the HOT 61’s…a kind of “souped up” class!

You could see the tell-tale wear on the tires because of that steady “left-hand turn”. The actual speed wasn’t blinding, but, it was fast enough to make you NOT wanna go down!! And, the sound…..well, I can’t even describe it!!

Thanks to the track staff, and my tape recorder, I was able to capture the names of all the winners of the heats, semi, and the finals…I THINK I got them all, if not, I am truly sorry…I tried!!

  • Heat #1-45’s…Go Takamine
  • Heat #2-45’s…Doug Young
  • Heat#3-61’s…Ken Curtis
  • Heat#4-61’s…Mark Hanna
  • Heat#5-Hot 61’s…Jody Perewitz
  • Heat#6-Hot 61’s…Matt Walksler
  • Bonus heat…Xavier Muriel…with Rick Petko
  • Semi…Dan Rose…(This was all I could get)
  • Final 45’s…Doug Young
  • Final 61’s…Kevin Clark
  • Final 61’s HOT…Matt Walksler

No spills, but, lots of chills and thrills!! A big thanks to Buzz Kanter and Bubba Blackwell for their between, AND during runs chatter, and helpful information about this fabulous sport. Bubba showed us his expertise with a big dresser, and, Buzz was very informative concerning nearly every aspect of this type of motor racing.

Also, for those interested…the 2018 Cannonball Run will be held in Sept…8th. to 22nd., starting in Portland, Maine, and finishing in Portland, Oregon….Don’t miss it…!

I just wanna thank Billy Lane for his hospitality, and, the Speedway kitchen for making the best “track-burgers” I ever ate!!! It was a good day all around, and, I’m certainly looking forward to the next Sons of Speed event…stay tuned…stand up for your country, and vets, and…GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

Choppertime at Willie’s Tattoo 2018 by Miserable George

I really don’t quite remember how many of Willie’s Chopper Shows I’ve been to, but, several other veterans and I agreed that this years’ was one of the largest!!! As has been the case lately, March 15 dawned bright and clear, AND…COLD!!!  But, thanks to the Big Weatherman in the Sky, it warmed up quite well…well enough for a few of the little darlings prancing around to shed some un-needed clothing…ah yes, biker babes…ya can’t beat ‘em!!! Out front, were several Rat Rods that the little darlings enjoyed posing with, plus, all the custom built bike entries, and in the back yard, were a host of vendors, and of course, the band stand, featuring a friend of mine…Big Rick and the Troublemakers. Back around front, it was time to award trophies, many of them handmade, along with tossing out of souvenir T’s and the usual “coolies”.

Gotta thank all the ladies who posed for me, and the inimitable “Roadside Marty” as well as Willie himself for their hospitality.

Nice to meet Mike Lichter and son, and famous bike builder Dave Perowitz again. All in all, a fabulous day…looking forward to the next one!! Hey, support our troops, and, stand up for your country…ride safe, (and often)…

Cabbage Patch & Cacklebery by Miserable George

A day in Samsula includes the Cabbage Patch as well as Cacklebery Campground. I got there early on a very cool, brisk Wednesday of Bike Week, 2018. Ran into my friend, photag “Jackman”, and we kinda backed each other up all day long. It was my first visit there, since we lost Ronnie awhile back…I really missed him. Several good bands there, including my friend, BIG DADDY….always a pleasure to see him. Of course, the “biggie” at the Patch, is the cole slaw wrestling. Huge crowd was there for that event.

Hey, where else can a middle aged lady walk around in her underwear in front of hundreds of people, and NOT get arrested!!!

Crazy man…!!! Cold weather, not-with-standing, a few of the ladies bared a bit of skin…oh yeah!! Also, the one man band inside the bar, filled the place to over-flowing…never saw the bar THAT crowded…he was good too!! It was a beautiful day all around, and I thank the Patch and Cacklebery folks for their help and consideration, and all the babes who stood still for my camera. Always a pleasure to visit there during the Biker weeks in Daytona….

Rods & Choppers at Broken Spoke by Miserable George

Sunday, March 11, 2018, as far as I know, was the beginning of Daytona’s Bike Week-2018…the weather was beautiful, so, we boogied north to the Broken Spoke, to pick up on a Chopper and Rat Rod showing.

Of course, there were a number of distractions, as there usually are at these shows…namely, BABES!!!

Hunger had a hand in it as well, so, we ventured next door to good old Smiley’s Tap, one of our old hang-outs from years ago!! Nostalgia and my love of “old school” took me over there for a bite to eat…!! Good food, and good service combined to make my mealtime a real pleasure!!!

Lots of changes in that area down through the years…no more bike parking on US#1, and, no more babe in the bed of a pick-up truck hawking beer!!! Although, Smiley’s still featured their delicious, out-door afternoon meal…that was always a winner!!

I’d like to extend my thanks to both Broken Spoke, and Smiley’s for their hospitality, which included allowing me to park my HEMI  on the grounds of a biker event…(unheard of!!!) Made my job a lot easier, thanks guys!!! Made a few new friends, and, ran into a few old ones too…yes, I REALLY did!!! More adventures during Bike Week-2018…coming up…stay tuned…ride safe…stand by our vets and your country!!!

TIKI DAY…Post 359 by Miserable George

The chilly weather did nothing to deter the nice crowd attending Tiki Day at American Legion Post 359, on U.S.#1,

just north of Port St. John, on March 3, 2018. The live band, “FreeWay” warmed the crowd a bit, I’d say!!!

My favorite burger cooker was there, doing his thing as only HE knows how!!! As always, good food, at a good price!!!

Lots of bikes graced the parking area, as well as 2 hot rods, and a hot, super-charged Vette!!

Some “super-charged” ladies there too!! Thanks girls for posing for this old boy!!

A big “Thank you” goes out to all the folks and riders who have been making this party the success that it is…hope to see you all next month…ride safe, and stand up for your country!!!!
